System Conflict
Even here in the Philippines the gaming community is excited and everyone is asking, "which of the 3 consoles (Gamecube, PS2 and Xbox) will win?" which in turn answers the question "what to buy?" The question is worth $200- $300 to everyone and no one here can afford to make a mistake.
The three companies are paying analysts millions for the answer. I, a humble gamer with 10+ years of experience under my belt will offer it for free.
The answer lies in history. One must look at the winners of the previous battles and the casualties.
Nearly 20 years ago there was only one console: the Atari 2600. It dominated the market so much only few people remember its competitors today. If I remember correctly, I think they were consoles from Mattel (yes the makers of Barbie) and Coleco. That doesn't matter. What matters is the reason why it won: its games. At that time its games were not only cutting edge but fun as well. Up until now, people are playing these games on cell phones and PDAs. Games like Pac-man, Centipede and Missile Command started people's passion for video games.
From the mid to late 80's Atari was blown away by competition from Japan. To this day America's consoles come from Japan. That is how much influence Nintendo has on the industry. Just like Pac-man, Mario became a household name. There was competition from Sega and Atari but they didn't have the games that were as fun and graphically astounding at that time as Mario, Zelda, Contra and Rockman. This was NES or Family Computer's other strength. Besides great games from Nintendo, third parties like Konami and Capcom contributed as well.
